ASNT Level II Training & Certification course:

  1. Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT)
  2. Magnetic Particle Testing
  3. Radiographic Testing (RT)
  4. Ultrasonic Testing (UT)

1. Penetrant Testing:

This method is frequently used for surface breaking flaws in many applications. It can be done on all types of non porous metals, non metals, magnetic and non magnetic materials. Basic principle of PT is capillary action of penetrant and blotting action of developer.

2. Magnetic Particle Testing:

In this method the near surface and surface discontinuities can be detected for ferromagnetic materials. The test object is magnetized by applying a magnetic field with an electromagnet or permanent magnet when a magnetic field encounters a discontinuity lying transverse to the direction of the magnetic field; the flux lines produce a magnetic flux leakage of their own. Because the magnetic flux lines don’t travel well in air. The fine colored ferromagnetic powder applied on the test area, the particles will be drawn into the discontinuity, reducing the air gap and producing a visible indication on the test surface.

3. Radiographic Testing:

This method is an effective volumetric scanning of defects in ferrous, non ferrous and other materials. Industrial radiography inspection is done by exposing the test objects to electromagnetic radiations like X-rays and Gamma rays. The image of the test object is recorded in an industrial X-ray film placed against the opposite side of the object.

Artificially generated through electricity X-rays are used for inspecting thinner or less dense materials e.g. aluminum. Decaying nuclear radiations emitted from Cobalt 60 and Iridium 192 sources are used for inspecting thicker and dense materials.

The X-ray film records the image of the test object by absorption of radiations received after penetrating the test object. The darker areas indicate where more radiations have passed through the part and lighter area where less radiation has passed through.

If a defect, void or foreign particles in the test objects, more radiations passes through this and causing a darker image on film.

4. Ultrasonic Testing:

This technique is used for the detection of internal and surface (particularly distant surface) defects in sound conducting materials. Ultra-high frequency sound is introduced into the part being inspected and if the sound hits a material with different acoustic impedance (density and acoustic velocity) some of the sound will reflect back to the sending unit and can be presented on a visual display. By knowing the speed of the sound through the part (the acoustic velocity) and the time required for the sound to return to the sending unit, the distance to the reflector (the indication with the different acoustic impedance) can be determined.

The most common sound frequencies used in UT are between 1.0 and 10.0 MHZ, which are too high to be heard and do not travel through air. The lower frequencies have greater penetrating power but less sensitivity, while the higher frequencies don’t penetrate as deeply but can detect smaller indications.
